Air Force Swimming Opens Speedo Cup On Strong Note

    LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Air Force men's team had a strong opening day the 2006 UCI/Speedo Cup sitting in second place amonst 13 men's teams at the Belmont Plaza. The women's team is in 12th place out of 20 teams.

    The Falcons trail only Stanford, the second-ranked program in the nation, and sit one spot ahead of Mountain West Conference foe BYU.

    Air Force earned top performances out of their relay teams and seniors Chris Knaute and Paul Parmenter. The 200 free and 400 medley relay teams both finished in fourth place. Knaute took third in the 500 free and Parmenter fourth in the 200 individual medley.

    The Falcons opened the meet taking fourth in the 200 free relay. Nick Uzelac, Parmenter, Knaute and T.J. Cowling combined to swim a time of 1:22.80.

    Knaute provisionally qualified for the NCAA's in the 500 free, with a season-best time of 4:25.73. Freshman Seasn O'Keefe also swam well for the Falcons in the 500, taking 10th with a time of 4:33.72 which is the ninth-fastest 500 free time in Academy history. Bryan Avery followed up in 12th (4:36.57).

    Parmenter took fourth in the 200 IM with a prelim time of 1:50.17. Seniors Justin Lapin and Nick Burton followed up in eighth and 11th place with times of 1:51.70 and 1:53.03. Freshman Alex Yee placed 15th with a time of 1:55.57 and sophomore Kai Yamashiro took 19th with a time of 1:55.37.

    Uzelac was AFA's top sprint swimmer, placing 10th in the 50 free with a prelim time of 21.15. Cowling took 13th with a time of 21.26, Ryan Moss took 20th with a time of 21.38 and freshman Chris Morin placed 25th with a time of 21.59.

     

     

    The Falcons 400 medley relay team consisiting of Parmenter, Justin Day, Matt Sievers and Knaute took fourth with a blazing time of 3:22.11.

    On the women's side, the Falcons got strong performances out of senior Lauren White and sophomore Jane Hwang. White placed fifth in the 500 free with a prelim time of 5:03.68 and Hwang took eighth in the 200 IM with a prelim time of 2:07.60.

    The Falcons also got strong swims out of seniors Blair Leake and Stephanie Hirst and freshman Becky Gleason in the 200 IM. Leake placed 25th (2:11.10), Gleason 36th (2:14.28) and Hirst 57th (2:16.73).

    Sophomore Laken Stogner was the Falcons' top spring swimmer, placing 16th in the 50 free with a time of 24.55. Freshman Katelyn Hunter, junior Kallyn Johnson and sophomore Robbie Nitzberg also swal well in the 50 free for the Falcons.

    Air Force finished out the day by placing 11th in the 400 medley relay. Hunter, Leake, Hwang and White combined to swim a time of 4:04.78.

    The Falcons return to action in day two of the three-day meet on Friday.
