Denver, Colo. - The Air Force women's swimming team opened its season Friday, finishing third at the Denver Relays. Winning the women's meet, which featured only relay races, was Wyoming with 116 points. Denver took second with 110 points, while Air Force finished with 52 points. Colorado School of Mines (27 points) and Mesa State (21 points) rounded out the competition.
The Falcons posted a pair of third-place finishes at the meet. The team of Jessica Rodgers, Kelly Grabarek and Jane Hwang (Jr., Irvine, Calif.) took third in the 300 butterfly relay, turning in a time of 3:02.26. Hwang, Kaeli Kluesner (Fr., Denver, Colo.), Rodgers and Becky Gleason (So., Ballwin, Mo.) also finished third in the 400 medley relay, posting a time of 4:09.67.
In its opener, Air Force also paid tribute to Leslie Sherman, a former classmate of current Falcon Robbie Nitzberg. Sherman, who attended West Springfield High School (Va.) with Nitzberg, was killed in the shootings at Virginia Tech in April. The Falcons wore the swim caps of West Springfield High to honor Sherman.
The Falcons are back in action Saturday, when they host eight other teams in a home-opening meet, slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
