Laughlin Breaks School Record in 100 Back at MW Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Air Force women's swimming & diving team completed day three action at the 2012 Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center. The Falcons currently sit in eighth place with 129 points.
Sophomore Samantha Laughlin broke the school record in the 100 yard backstroke, twice, as she finished fifth overall, for Air Force's highest finish so far in at the championships. Laughlin broke the school record in the prelims with a time of 55.40. She then lowered her time to 55.37 in the finals. Laughlin surpassed Erin Bleyl's previous best of 56.47.
It was a great day for the Falcons in the 100 back overall, as the top three times in school history were swam. Bleyl swam the second-fastest time in school history with a time of 56.15, which put her in 11th place. Junior Heather Ireland tied the third-fastest mark in school history with a time of 57.36, finishing 21st overall.
Freshman Kim Davis also swam well for the Falcons in the 400 IM. Davis finished 12th overall final finals time of 4:22.88, which was .11 secords short of her own school record.
The Falcons had a pair of school top 10 swims in the 100 breast. Junior Rosie Mayou swam back-to-back career-best swims. Her finals time of 1:05.21 was the third-fastest mark in school history and put her in 22nd. Freshman Noel Niccum swam a time of 1:06.14 for the eighth-fastest time at AFA and put her in 23rd.
The Falcons had three top-20 finishes in the 100 fly. Sophomore Gabby Aranda placed 15th with a prelim time of 56.25, junior Haley Holcombe placed 15th with a prelim time of 56.11 and senior Katharine Ernst placed 17th with a prelim time of 56.11.
Air Force's top swimmer in the 200 free was sophomore Hannah Cesare, who a time of 1:53.40.
The Falcons also placed eighth in the 200 free relay. The group of Cassie Fletcher, Cesare, Ireland and Laughlin swam a time of 1:35.21.
Boise State leads the meet with 506 points. Final day action of the four-day meet is tomorrow.
