Air Force Women Headed Into Final Day At MWC Swimming & Diving Championships In Seventh Place

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Air Force women's team currently sits in seventh place with 197 points after day three at the Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at Oklahoma City Community College. Four-time defending conference champion BYU leads the men's and women's field with 521 and 497 points, respectively. The Falcons men's team is currently third.

UNLV trails the Cougars in men's action with 430 points, followed by Air Force (401), Utah (390) and Wyoming (306). The Rams hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 422.50 points, followed by UNLV (399), Utah (353), New Mexico (245), Wyoming (201), Air Force (197) and San Diego State (157.50).

Leading the way for the Falcons was Jaymie VanKooten who won the 100 yard butterfly event. VanKooten's finals time of 55.72 was over half a second faster than her previous best and is the second-fastest time in school history.

The top finisher for Air Force in the 400 individual medley was Colleen Smith, who finished 21st with a time of 4:39.24. In the 200 freestyle, Lara Styles finished seventh with a finals time of 1:53.32 and a career best mark of 1:53.13 in the prelims, which is also the third-fastest time in school history.

Blair Leake led the way for AFA in the 100 breaststroke, taking 12th place with a time of 1:06.01, which is the fourth-fastest mark in school history. In the 100 backstroke, Lindsey Jansen finished 19th with a career-best time of 59.71, which is the fifth fastest mark at AFA.

Lauren Nichole Bursey took 16th for the Falcons in the 3-meter diving competition with 319.00 points. Air Force concluded day three with a fifth place finish in the 400 medley relay. The group of Jansen, Blair Leake, VanKooten and Carley Baxter swam a time of 3:56.71.

 

 

The MWC Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 21, following the 6 p.m. finals events and the announcement of the individual and team awards.
