Air Force Defeats Northern Colorado, Swept By Denver

    USAFA, Colo. - In their last non-conference competition of the season, the Air Force men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted in-state rivals Denver and Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon in Cadet Natatorium. The Air Force men dropped a 153-89 decision to Denver, while the women lost to Denver, 130.5-104.5, but defeated Northern Colorado, 137-103.

    The Pioneers were dominant in the meet, winning 11 of 13 men's events and 10 of 13 women's events. On the women's side, Lauren Shetley (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) led the way for the Falcons, sweeping the diving events. She won the 1-meter dive by five-hundredths of a point with a score of 240.20, while scoring a 225.30 to take first place at 3-meters.

    Among the top performers for the women's swimmers was senior Laken Stogner (Bowdon, Ga.), who took second in the 100 free with a time of 54.01, while also finishing third in the 50 free with a time of 25.08. Classmate Jane Hwang (Irvine, Calif.) added a second-place finish in the 200 free with a mark of 1:55.64.

    In the 400 IM, Kaeli Kluesner (So., Denver, Colo.) was the Falcons' top performer, placing second with a time of 4:49.20, while Becky Gleason (Jr., Ballwin, Mo.) took third in the event with a mark of 4:50.61. In addition, freshman Katharine Ernst (Folsom, Calif.) scored a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly, clocking in at 2:12.39.

    Securing the two individual wins for the Falcon men were senior Kai Yamashiro (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and sophomore Robert Dawson (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Yamashiro finished first in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 1:51.87, while Dawson won the men's 50 freestyle for the second-straight day, clocking in at 21.05. Dawson also added a second-place showing in the 100 free, finishing in 46.56, just behind 2008 NCAA participant Blake Worsley.

     

     

    Junior Sean O'Keefe (Lake Oswego, Ore.) was the runner-up in the 1000 free, while sophomore Tom Hansen (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) finished second in the 500 freestyle. In addition, the 400 medley relay team of Yamashiro, Justin Day (Sr., Peyton, Colo.), Benjamin Gunn (So., Gainesville, Ga.) and Bryan Avery (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) clocked a season-best mark of 3:23.97 to finish second.

    Eric Robinson (So., Lakewood, Colo.) took third place in both the 200 freestyle and the 200 butterfly, while Chris Morin (Jr., Crown Point, Ind.) was the third-place finisher in the 50 free, with a season-best mark of 21.69.

    Cole Smith (Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) was the top performer for the Falcons in the 400 IM, finishing third with a mark of 4:19.07, while Day was Air Force's top finisher in the 200 breaststroke, taking third place with a time of 2:11.46.

    For the divers, Kyle Van Valkenburg (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) led Air Force at 1-meter, finishing third with a score of 274.15, while classmate David Arlington (Eagle River, Alaska) was the top Air Force performer in the 3-meter dive, placing third with a mark of 280.75.

    The Falcons return to action next weekend, Jan. 23-24, for a pair of conference dual meets on the road. Air Force will take on BYU Friday at 5:00 p.m., followed by a noon dual against Utah on Saturday.
