Falcons Dominate In 3-0 Win Over Idaho State At AFA Invite
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force women's soccer team erupted for a season-high three goals in a 3-0 win over Idaho State in day one action Friday night at the Air Force Invitational at the Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons improve to 4-7-1 on the season while the Bengals drop to 2-8-0.
The Falcons wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as sophomore defender Christin Brodie put Air Force up 1-0 in just a little over three minutes into the match. At the 3:17 mark, Brodie fired a rocket shot from the top of the box, about 20 yards out, that went through the hands of Idaho State goalkeeper Esther Toronto for her first-career goal.
The Falcons and Bengals would go scoreless for the next 72 minutes until Air Force broke the game wide open with two goals within 41 seconds.
At the 75:50 mark, Brittney Perkowski netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season to make it a 2-0 game. Freshman Corbin Sanford was charging hard down the right end line and lofted a pass that Perkowski headed in from 10 yards out for the score.
Just 41 seconds later at the 76:31 mark, senior Meredith Benson tallied her third goal of the season to make it a 3-0 match. Freshman Katherine Taylor drilled a turnaround shot from the top of the box that ISU backup goalkeeper Lyndsay Gensler deflected. The ball went right to Benson who cleaned up with the score.
The Falcons outshot the Bengals 17-7 overall and 11-6 on goal. Freshman Erin Wallace notched her third shutout of the season, collecting six saves in the win at goalkeeper for AFA.
In the opening match of the tournament, Northern Colorado (3-4-2) battled Wright State (5-3-2) to a 1-1 double-overtime tie. Whitney Hawkins netted the UNC's goal in the 31st minute and Michelle Sarmiento tied the game up for Wright State in the 71st minute.
The AFA Invite concludes Sunday (Oct. 2) with Northern Colorado taking on Idaho State at 11 a.m. and Wright State battling Air Force at 1 p.m.
