Air Force opens MW play at Colorado State
Air Force women’s soccer opens Mountain West play at Colorado State this Friday, Sept. 27. Kickoff is 4 pm. Live stats will be available for the match.
Air Force dropped a 1-0 match at home to Drexel on Sunday. The Dragons scored the lone goal of the match in the 64th minute. The Falcons were held scoreless despite taking 13 shots, two of which went off posts.
Air Force returns 13 letterwinners and six starters. The Falcons welcome 12 freshmen.
Air Force went 5-9-3 and finished eighth in the Mountain West Conference in 2012.
Young Falcon Squad
With a squad of 12 freshmen, Air Force has one of the youngest teams in the nation. The Falcons have started seven different freshmen this year. Air Force has started four freshmen in seven of eight games.
Stambaugh Building Upon AF Records
Senior Kelly Stambaugh continues to build upon her lofty resume as goalkeeper at Air Force. A fourth-year starter, Stambaugh ranks amongst the top three in nearly every goalkeeping category at Air Force. She is currently the all-time leader in goals-against average (1.10). Stambaugh ranks second at the Academy in career shutouts (15) and third in wins (18), minutes (5,238) and saves (282).
Greco Assisting On Every Score
Freshman Ashley Greco has assisted on all four Air Force goals so far this season. Her four assists are the third-most by a freshman in program history. It is the most assists by a frosh since 1998.
Scouting Colorado State
Colorado State is in its first year as a Div. I program. The Rams are 1-4-2 on the season after a 1-0 loss to North Dakota State and 0-0 tie with SIU-Edwardsville over the weekend. Four separate players have scored goals for the Rams this season. Elena Eidson has a 2.40 GAA and Maggier Sherman a 0.70 GAA in split duty at goalkeeper.
Larry Friend (USAFA 1985) is 23-49-10 in his fifth year as the head coach at Air Force.
Bill Hempen (Evansville 1981) is 267-192-46 in his 25th year as a head coach.
