Air Force Hosts Sam Houston State
Air Force women's soccer plays host to Sam Houston State this Friday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. Admission is free for all Falcon soccer home matches.
Air Force returns 16 letterwinners and eight starters. The Falcons welcome 11 newcomers. Air Force returns three of its top four scorers from last season, including leading 2011 scorer in sophomore midfielder McKenna Fox.
Air Force went 6-10-3 and finished fifth in the Mountain West Conference in 2011. The Falcons graduated four seniors, all starters.
Air Force tied Colgate 1-1 and lost to Colorado 2-0 last weekend. The Falcons rallied with a goal by Leah Bratt in the 87th minute to tie Colgate at home Friday. The Falcons fell to CU 2-0 on Sunday in a nationally televised match.
Scoreless Streak Snapped
The Falcon defenses scoreless streak was snapped in the 10th minute against Colgate, ending a streak of 409 minutes and 59 seconds of scoreless defense. Air Force had not allowed a goal dating back to the St. John's on Aug. 24.
Stambaugh Amongst NCAA Leaders
Air Force goalkeeper Kelly Stambaugh is ranked amongst the nation's Top 20 in a pair of categories. The junior is 20th in the nation with a 0.52 goals allowed average and 11th in saves percentage (.902). Stambaugh has allowed just five goals in 671 minutes, and has five shutouts on the season. Her 0.98 career GAA is the best ever at Air Force.
Senior defender Kim Koeppen and senior midfielder Sophia Lockerby are the team captains for the 2012 season.
Scouting The Opponent
Sam Houston State is 3-6 on the season after a 2-0 loss to Rice. Midfielder Trisha Mallory leads the Bearkats with two goals scores. Kylie Hambleton has logged the most minutes at goalkeeper and has a 0.83 GAA.
- Larry Friend (USAFA 1985) is 21-36-9 in his fourth year as the head coach at Air Force.
- Tom Brown (Midwestern State 1989) is 36-39-5 in his fifth year at Sam Houston State and 166-57-30 in his 20th year as a head coach.
- Air Force has three freshmen on its roster from Texas. Allie Baumgarten (Plano), Ally Swift (Aledo) and Asia Williams (Pflugerville) all hail from Texas.
- Air Force plays Sam Houston State for the first time.
Air Force opens Mountain West play at new conference rival Fresno State on Sunday, Sept. 30.
