Air Force Opens 2012 Hosting Lamar and Montana
Air Force women's soccer opens the 2012 season with a pair of home matches, Aug. 17-19, hosting Lamar and Montana. Kickoff Friday vs. Lamar is at 7 p.m. and Sunday vs. Montana at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all Air Force soccer home matches.
Air Force returns 16 letterwinners and eight starters. The Falcons welcome 11 newcomers. Air Force returns three of its top four scorers from last season, including leading 2011 scorer in sophomore midfielder McKenna Fox.
Air Force went 6-10-3 and finished fifth in the Mountain West Conference in 2011. The Falcons graduated four seniors, all starters.
Falcons Split Preseason Exhibition Matches
Air Force played a pair of exhibition matches at Northern Colorado Aug. 11 and 13. The Falcons took game one 2-1 and lost the second game by a 2-1 margin. After UNC scored first, freshman Allie Baumgarten scored the Falcons' first goal and Tory Gullo netted the game-winner in game one. In game two, Leah Brattscored for the Falcons in the loss.
Air Force is 7-13 all time in season openers. The Falcons are 7-9 when opening at home. Last season, the Falcons opened with a 4-1 win over Colorado Mines.
Lamar returns 14 letterwinners and eight starters of their 2011 team that went 9-8-2. The Lady Cardinals' top returning scorer is sophomore M/F Kristin Bos.
Montana returns 19 letterwinners and all 11 starters off the 2011 team that went 6-12-4. Junior forward Erin Craig is the team's top returning scorer.
Larry Friend (USAFA 1985) is 17-34-6 entering his fourth year as the head coach at Air Force.
Orlando Cervantes (San Jose State 1999) enters his first year as a head coach at Lamar.
Mark Plakorous (Kansas 1999) is 6-12-4 at Montana entering his second year at Montana.
- Montana head coach Mark Plakorous was and assistant coach with the Air Force soccer program from 1999-2001.
- Air Force senior Sophia Lockerby is a native of Montana. Lockerby hails from Great Falls and attended Great Falls High School.
- Montana has one player on its roster from Colorado. Freshman defender Brooke Moody hails from Parker and attended Regis Jesuit High School.
Series History vs. Opponents
- Air Force takes on Lamar for the first time.
- Air Force is 0-3 vs. Montana. The Falcons lost 5-0 in the first meeting in 1997, 3-1 in 1998 and 1-0 in 2003.
Air Force travels to the East Coast to take on St. John's and Fairleigh Dickinson next weekend. The Falcons take on St. John's on Friday, Aug. 24 and Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, Aug. 26.
