Katherine Orellana scored the game's only goal early in the second half and Kylie Wassell made five saves to lead the UNLV women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Air Force Friday night at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, the Rebels improved to 7-8-2 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West while the Falcons fell to 6-8-3 and 1-3 in league play.
Following a scoreless first half, Orellana scored her fifth goal of the season at the 46:40 mark. Courtney Botelho started the play with a centering pass to Macy Jo Harrison, who found Orellana past the Falcon defense. Orellana made one slight move to her right then placed a 12-yard shot past Air Force goalie Kelly Stambaugh for the game-winner.
The Rebels dominated the first half, outshooting Air Force 11-3, but Stambaugh came up big by making seven saves. The Falcons then turned things around in the second half with a 12-7 advantage in shots. The Rebels did outshoot Air Force 18-15 in total shots and 12-5 in shots on goal.
Air Force junior Sophia Lockerby had the Falcons' best scoring chance when her shot from 25 yards clanked off the crossbar with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Stambaugh finished the game with 11 saves while Wassell had five for her third shutout of the season.
Air Force returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 23 against the San Diego State Aztecs at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
