USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women’s soccer (7-4-3, 4-0-3 MW) remains unbeaten in conference play with a 1-0 win over New Mexico (9-6, 4-3 MW) on Senior Night Friday at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Erin Speer scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute as the Falcons tied a program record for most wins in MW play.
Senior Kaylee Shalongo was able to get the ball into the middle of the New Mexico defense and froze Lobo goalkeeper Emily Johnson with a hesitation move. She pass to a wide open Speer, who calmly tapped pass Johnson for the goal.
The Falcons were able to make their shots count, as New Mexico held a 17-12 advantage in shots. Junior Taylor Cobb led the Falcons with four shots.
Junior Jennifer Hiddink posted her fifth shutout of the season and fourth in conference. Hiddink recorded 11 saves for the third time this season.
“It was another amazing effort by our team,” Air Force head coach Larry Friend said. “Coach Dyche of New Mexico has a phenomenal team. The game could have gone either way. That’s the way it is in this conference this year. I’m very proud of our effort tonight, all across the board. It was a beautiful assist by our senior Kaylee Shalongo. She showed a lot of composure and we got a clean finish by Erin Speer.”
After the game, Air Force honored its senior class. Alex Kahalley, Angela Karamanos, Brooke Rittmann, Kaylee Shalongo and Kristen Shimkus were honored for their contributions to Air Force women’s soccer.
Air Force returns to action Sunday, Oct. 15, hosting San Diego State. Kickoff is set for noon MT.
