FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Air Force women's soccer team erupted for a season-high five goals in a 5-0 drubbing of Southern Utah Sunday afternoon in a neutral-site match at Lumberjack Stadium, home field for Northern Arizona. The win improves the Falcons to 6-3-1 the season and drops the Thunderbirds to 2-4-1.
Junior Bridgett Murphy and sophomore Stephanie Patterson both scored two goals and added an assist for the Falcons, who score their most goals in a game since a 5-1 win over North Dakota State in 2007.
Patterson put the Falcons ahead 94 seconds into the match with her first goal. Junior Meagan Eissele assisted on the score. The Falcons made it a 2-0 game in the eighth minute when Eryn Avjian scored her first-career goal with Patterson assisting.
Murphy then notched her first goal of the season in the 34th minute to make it 3-0. Patterson made it 4-0 with a goal in the 70th minute. Eissele and Murphy assisted on the score.
Murphy scored the fifth goal in the 88th minute, with Avjian assisting.
Air Force notched its fourth shutout of the season and improved to 6-0-1 when scoring a goal in a match. Freshman Kelly Stambaugh recorded one save in 45 minutes in the start at goalkeeper. Junior Sharon Aradine had three saves in a shutout second half of action.
With six wins on the season, the Falcons have tripled their win total from a season ago. Its 15 team goals is the most in a season since 2005 and its 16 team assists are the most since 2001.
The Falcons return to action next weekend hosting the Falcon Invitational, Sept. 24-26. Friday's action on Sept. 24, features UNLV vs. VMI in the opening match (4 p.m.) and Weber State vs. Air Force in the second (6 p.m.).
