Sept. 13, 2008
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force women's soccer team erupted for a season-high three goals, as the Falcons defeated Army, 3-1, in the opening match of the 2008 Falcon Invitational at the Cadet Soccer Stadium Saturday morning. In the second game, Colorado College (5-0-1) rallied to a 2-1 win in double-overtime over Denver (3-1-1).
Things did not look so well for Air Force (2-4) early on in the match as Caroline Miller scored off a free kick from 25 yards out just two minutes and 31 seconds into the match, to give Army (4-2) an early 1-0 lead.
Air Force was able to regroup and tie the match up in the 33rd minute. Krystin Shanklin took a pass from Meagan Eissele and fired a rocket-shot to the right corner. The ball struck the post and caromed into the net.
Seven minutes later, the Falcons jumped ahead on a goal in the 40th minute by Bridgett Murphy. Ashley Sikora fed Murphy from just inside the box and Murphy was able to get the ball past Army goalkeeper Alex Lostetter for the score.
The Falcons dominated the shot charts, taking 20 shots to 10 by the Black Knights. The Falcons also had 13 shots on goal to Army's 4. Murphy led Air Force with nine shot attempts, four on goal. Dymon Washington had five shots for the Knights, two on goal.
Erin Wallace and Ashlee Curtis split goalkeeping duties for the Falcons. Wallace started the match and picked up the win. Curtis did not allow a goal in the second half and made a spectacular diving stop on an Army shot attempt.
