Senior Stephanie Patterson scored twice and freshman Bailey Harnett notched the first goal of her career Friday night as the Air Force women's soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over Robert Morris University at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, Air Force improved to 3-1-2 while the Colonials fell to 0-6-1.
After a scoreless first half, Patterson put the Falcons on the board in the 55th minute when she deflected a free kick from teammate Sophia Lockerby into the net past RMU goalie Chelsea De Jager for her second tally of the season. Patterson then put the Falcons ahead 2-0 in the 58th minute when she took a cross from the right side by Megan Dozier and flicked a shot past De Jager from eight yards out.
Harnett closed the scoring with a beautiful shot from 30 yards out to the right of De Jager that just found the upper right corner of the net in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Felicia Sturgeon recorded the assist.
Air Force dominated the play throughout the game, outshooting the Colonials 23-10 in total shots and 16-2 in shots on goal, including an 11-2 advantage in the second half. Junior Kelly Stambaugh made one save in nearly 73 minutes, while freshman Becky Murphy made one save in 17 minutes of action as Air Force posted its third consecutive shutout.
"I am very happy because it was a full team effort from the sidelines to everyone on the field," said head coach Larry Friend. "We were able to play a bunch of players tonight and get a lot of freshmen their first collegiate minutes."
The Falcons will look to sweep the weekend when they host Bryant University on Sunday, Sept. 9 at noon.
