USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force women's soccer team (3-2-1) downed Fairleigh Dickinson (0-4) 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the 2010 Air Force Fall Classic. The Falcons went unbeaten over the weekend and took second place. Northern Colorado (4-2) claimed the tournament with a 2-1 victory over The Citadel (1-2-1) in the morning match.
Sophomore midfielder Anna Lowe scored in the 44th minute to put the Falcons ahead. Sophomore forward Stephanie Patterson sent a crossing pass into the box from the left side, which freshman Kaleigh Moses tapped to Lowe, who finished by firing back across to the right side of the post for the score.
The Falcons dominated the second-half but were not able to add any more scores. Air Force out-shot Fairleigh Dickinson 17-7 on the day.
Freshman Kelly Stambaugh recorded her second career shutout, notching three saves.
In the opening game, Northern Colorado rallied from a 1-0 deficit to pull out the win over The Citadel with a pair of goals by Ariel Cook.
The Citadel took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute when Vanessa Aponte scored off a free kick. From the left corner of the box, Aponte lifted the ball over the Northern Colorado wall and found the net by the top right post for the score.
Northern Colorado then tied it in the 60th minute on Cook's from goal. Cook fired from 20 yards out and the ball glanced off The Citadel goalkeeper Laura Serafino's hands into the net.
Cook gave the Bears the lead in the 87th minute heading in the ball off a corner kick by Olivia Deadmond.
The Citadel, which tied Air Force on Friday, claims third place. Fairleigh Dickinson took fourth.
