Doug Day Named North Central Region Coach of the Year
April 14, 2008
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Air Force women's gymnastics coach Doug Day was named the North Central Regional Head Coach of the Year following the NCAA regional championships this past weekend. It is the first such honor for Day and the first women's coaching award since 2001. Day guided Academy gymnasts to a regional championship meet for the first time since 2005. Day is a three-time national assistant coach of the year, claiming the award twice with the women's team at Minnesota and once with the men's team at New Mexico. In fact, Day was the first-ever NCAA coach to earn the distinction with both a men's and women's team. He is the second women's coach to earn the regional distinction. Former head coach Lisa Woody (2000-05) was named the North Central Regional Head Coach of the Year following the 2001 season. Joining Day with North Central regional honors were Iowa's Talya Vexler and Jeff Richards (assistant coach of the year), Utah's Ashley Postell (gymnast of the year) and Minnesota's Marc Ryan (administrator of the year).
