INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Three members of the Air Force women's gymnastics team were selected to the NCAA Regional Championships, the NCAA office announced this afternoon (March 24). One all-arounder and two event specialists were invited to compete at the Minneapolis Regional on Saturday, April 5.
Senior Linnaea Hance will represent the Academy in the all-around for the third straight year, while classmate Katie Hawthorne and sophomore Shannen Kelly will serve as the individual event specialists on the uneven bars and balance beam, respectively.
Hance, who has competed in the all-around at the last two regional meets, enters the 2014 championships with a Regional Qualifying Score of 38.850. Hawthorne, who competed in the all-around at last year's regional meet, holds a 9.775 RQS on the uneven bars, while Kelly will make her first appearance at the regional meet following a regional qualifying score of 9.750 on the balance beam.
The six full squads scheduled to compete at the Minneapolis Regional are second-ranked Oklahoma, 11th-ranked Illinois, 14th-ranked Minnesota and 19th-ranked California, as well as Southern Utah and San Jose State. Individual athletes, including the remaining all-around competitors, event specialists and alternates are from Iowa and Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The Minneapolis Regional will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at Minnesota's Sports Pavilion.
Six teams, five all-around competitors who are not on a qualifying team and one specialist per event with a minimum RQS of 9.400 were named to each of the six host sites (Athens, Ga., Baton Rouge, La., Fayetteville, Ark., Minneapolis, Minn., Seattle, Wash., and University Park, Pa.). The top two teams and top two all-around competitors not on an advancing team from each regional meet will earn an automatic berth into the national championship meet, which will be held in Birmingham, Ala., on April 18-20.
