WOODLAND, Calif. - Air Force freshman Kara Witgen was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday, March 18. It is the first career honor for the Romeo, Mich., native.
The weekly conference award, voted on by the league's coaches and members of the conference office, recognized Witgen's standout performance during the Falcons' March 14 meet at New Hampshire. Witgen recorded a career-high on the balance beam at that meet, scoring a 9.825 to tie for fourth and help the Falcons to the third-highest team score in MPSF history (49.125). She also added a 9.750 on the floor exercise, as the Falcons surpassed the 195-point mark for the first time since 2004.
Witgen, who shared the conference's March 18 awards with UC Davis' Anna Shumaker (Gymnast of the Week) and San Jose State's Julia Greer (Specialist of the Week), is the third Air Force gymnast to earn a weekly award for the conference this season, joining Sarah Neumann (Feb. 4, Newcomer of the Week) and Linnaea Hance (Feb. 11, Gymnast of the Week).
Air Force, which improved its overall team score to 195.300 last night in its dual meet with #21 Arizona, travels to Davis, Calif., this Saturday (March 22) for the 2014 MPSF Championships, which will take place at 6:00 p.m., inside The Pavilion on the UC Davis campus.
