WOODLAND, Calif. - Air Force sophomore Jessica Wallander was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced tonight (March 12). It is the third overall MPSF honor for the Dallas, Texas, native, who also claimed one weekly award as a freshman.
Collecting career-best marks in two of her three events on Monday, March 11, Wallander helped Air Force to its best overall score in seven years (194.700) during a dual meet with 13th-ranked Denver. The sophomore tallied a career-best mark 9.850 to lead the Falcons on the vault (fourth), while adding a personal-best score of 9.800 on the uneven bars (fifth). Her score on the bars helped the Falcons to break the program's 11-year-old event record, as they combined for a score of 48.925. She also finished within the top half of the field on the floor exercise, with a sixth-place score of 9.750.
Wallander also paced the Falcons to a third-place finish at the Eagle Invitational on Saturday, March 13 ... a placement that included a victory over MPSF foe, Alaska-Anchorage. She tallied a then-season-best score of 9.800 to lead Air Force on the vault (fifth), while posting a score of 9.725 to account for the team's best placement on the floor exercise (12th). She also finished within the top 10 on the uneven bars, with a score of 9.700 (ninth).
Air Force returns to action this weekend for a pair of meets in California. The Falcons will travel to Davis for a triangular meet with MPSF opponent UC Davis and Sacramento State on Friday, March 15, before heading to Sacramento for a rematch with the Hornets on Sunday, March 17.
