Getting to Know You: Shannen Kelly

    Each week during the 2014 season, GoAirForceFalcons.com will feature a member of the Air Force women's gymnastics team. This week, the spotlight is on sophomore Shannen Kelly, (Phoenix, Ariz.), who earned the program's Outstanding Freshman award last year.

    ON GYMNASTICS...
    How did you get started in gymnastics?
    My mom was thinking about signing me up and when we went to look at the gym I didn't want to leave.

    Who are your biggest fans?
    My little sisters, they support me in everything.

    What challenge do you find in gymnastics that you don't find in any other sport?
    Trying to maintain skills throughout the year while also giving your body a break.

    What do you like best about gymnastics?
    It's fun and challenging... trying new skills, finally making it, travelling with your best friends

    What is your favorite event and why?
    Beam! I love training beam.

    Do you have any pre-meet rituals?
    I have my little routine of how I do my hair and makeup, and listening to good music while I get ready.

    For returners: What has been your favorite road trip?
    California last year, I like warm weather.

    For returners: What is your most memorable road trip experience?
    Getting recognized while we were in Michigan.

    What is your advice for young gymnasts?
    Work hard and have fun.

    What drew you to the Air Force women's gymnastics team?
    The girls were very supportive from my very first visit. I was also drawn to the fact that I could pursue a career and keep competing.

    What are you most excited about for the season?
    The team, we have so many talented girls and a lot of motivation. We're doing big things.

    Describe your personality in two words
    Sassy and loyal.

    ON THE ACADEMY...
    Who are the biggest influences in your life and why?
    Probably my teammates because they're the ones who push you through from the start.

     

     

    How do you balance your athletics, academics and military duties?
    A lot of lists and a lot of short naps.

    Who is your favorite non-gymnast athlete(s) at the Academy?
    My roommate Jessica Steuber (Fencing) because she is awesome at life.

    What is your favorite class?
    Law

    Who is your favorite professor/AOC/etc.?
    My AMT, MSgt Combass

    What is your favorite place on the Academy grounds?
    The Tzo at night, it's calm and the stars look amazing.

    What were your first thoughts of the Academy?
    It's very clean and organized.

    What is your favorite thing about USAFA?
    The friends I've made.

    What has been the hardest thing about the Academy?
    Everything here moves very quickly so just trying to be ahead all the time is exhausting.

    What was your most memorable "welcome to college" moment?
    Getting yelled at on the bus because my feet didn't touch the ground. (Because I can totally help that?!)

    When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grow up?
    President

    What is one thing that you just can't live without?
    Coffee

    If you had $1,000,000, what would you do?
    Honestly I would probably go shopping. A lot.

    What is your favorite vacation spot?
    San Diego, CA and Steamboat Springs, CO

    What is the most interesting place you have traveled to?
    NYC

    What is one song that you're tired of hearing?
    Pretty much every Black Eyed Peas song gets overplayed.

    If your life story was turned into a movie ... who should play you?
    Katniss Everdean, not Jennifer Lawrence, Katniss.

    What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
    Cake batter with sprinkles!

    What is your favorite TV show?
    Gossip Girl

    What was your first job?
    Working open gym a couple times at my club, does that count?

    If you had a theme song, what would it be?
    Born to Die by Lana Del Rey

    If you could be on any TV show, what would it be?
    Gossip Girl (I would be Blair) or That 70s Show

    How many hours of sleep do you need (and now ... how many do you get?)
    I need about 7, I usually get between 4 and 7 depending on how organized and motivated I am that week.

    What sports teams do you follow?
    Arizona teams, especially GCU rugby.

    What do you want to do after graduation?
    Hopefully law school

    What is your proudest achievement?
    Going to nationals my senior year

    What era would you most like to travel to?
    The 20s so I could wear awesome outfits and headbands and makeup.

    What is your favorite movie of all-time?
    The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

    What is a secret talent that few people know you have?
    I am a very talented singer, just ask Emily Bucher.

    What is one thing about your hometown that you miss?
    Warm weather and sunshine all the time. And the grid system of Phoenix roads.
