Each week during the 2014 season, GoAirForceFalcons.com will feature a member of the Air Force women's gymnastics team. This week, the spotlight is on Darby Germain, a freshman from West Point, N.Y. As the daughter of parents in the military, Germain had the opportunity to grow up all over the world.
How did you get started in gymnastics?
My two best friends were in a gymnastics class and I made my mom put me in the class with them.
Who are your biggest fans?
My mom, definitely.
What challenge do you find in gymnastics that you don't find in any other sport?
The huge mental game that comes with it and the huge amount of hours and commitment you have to put in.
What do you like best about gymnastics?
The excitement that comes with getting past all the challenges we are faced with whether it's getting a new skill or finally hitting a routine or anything.
What is your favorite event and why?
Floor, I love the thrill of flipping high and performing.
Do you have any pre-meet rituals?
Blasting some of my favorite songs and singing and dancing along with them to get pumped.
What is your advice for young gymnasts?
Always stay positive and keep your chin up no matter what, even on the hard days because a good attitude will always win out over frustration and being down on yourself in the end.
What drew you to the Air Force women's gymnastics team?
Well, I'm a military brat so my colonel dad wanted me to just take a look at the school/team and I very quickly fell in love with the amazing opportunities the school offered and the unity and energy of the team.
What are you most excited about for the upcoming season?
How powerful and surprising I think we are going to be as a team and also experiencing college meet environments for the first time.

ON THE ACADEMY...
Who are the biggest influences in your life and why?
Mom, because she literally has been through everything with me good and bad, and Dad, because of all the advice and powerful words of wisdom he has given me throughout my life.
How do you balance your athletics, academics and military duties?
I actually have no idea...so I guess just not thinking about it and getting my stuff done early.
Who is your favorite non-gymnast athlete(s) at the Academy?
Christian Eells (I have many favorites though!)
What is your favorite class?
Who is your favorite professor/AOC/etc.?
What is your favorite place on the Academy grounds?
Probably the overlook because it really shows how beautiful the mountains and chapel are.
What were your first thoughts of the Academy?
What is your favorite thing about USAFA?
The amount of amazing and good hearted people there are at this school that will be there for anything and whenever you need them, particularly my team.
What has been the hardest thing about the Academy?
Being a freshman...
What was your most memorable "welcome to college" moment?
Probably having to buy all my books on my own and the amount of papers I had to complete the second week of school.
When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grow up?
Definitely a singer/dancer or an astronaut.
What is one thing that you just can't live without?
My puppy...well, having a puppy I can call mine at home.
If you had $1,000,000, what would you do?
Buy a private jet and take my team to some gorgeous island. (Cara would provide the other necessities ... read her "Getting to Know You!")
What is your favorite vacation spot?
Charleston, South Carolina
What is the most interesting place you have traveled to?
What is one song that you're tired of hearing?
Somebody that I Used to Know ... so annoying
If your life story was turned into a movie ... who should play you?
Anna from Frozen or Venelope from Wreck it Ralph (Yes, these are fictional characters)
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Mint chocolate Chip
What is your favorite TV show?
Pretty Little Liars and How I Met Your Mother
What was your first job?
Babysitting my next door neighbors' kids
If you had a theme song, what would it be?
I honestly have no idea but it would probably be something that has to do with dancing and just being happy!
If you could be on any TV show, what would it be?
Say Yes to the Dress
How many hours of sleep do you need (and now ... how many do you get?)
I usually get 6 or 7 but I probably need 8 or 9.
What sports teams do you follow?
What do you want to do after graduation?
I have no idea that is so far away...
What is your proudest achievement?
Never failing to beat the boys in push-ups in elementary and middle school.
What era would you most like to travel to?
What is your favorite movie of all-time?
Lion King and Frozen
What is a secret talent that few people know you have?
I can move my ears and pop my jaw out of place. That's really weird I know...
What is one thing about your hometown that you miss?
Taking my dog on walks by the river.
