Getting to Know You: Cara Curran

Each week during the 2014 season, will feature a member of the Air Force women's gymnastics team. This week, the spotlight is on freshman Cara Curran. One of two `hometown' gymnasts on the Falcons' roster, Curran will be making her first appearance at the Academy this weekend.

How did you get started in gymnastics?
My mom put me in the sport because I had too much energy as a child

Who are your biggest fans?
My parents and sister

What challenge do you find in gymnastics that you don't find in any other sport?
Your hand rips open and you still continue your bar routine--and for some reason it's thrilling to see how big of a rip you get.

What do you like best about gymnastics?
The constant process of "eating" or crashing on skills until you finally get it.

What is your favorite event and why?
Bars, I love the feeling of flying and swinging through the air.

Do you have any pre-meet rituals?
I always take Aleve and eat cheerios before any big competitions.

What is your advice for young gymnasts?
Never give up, push through the pain, and always stay optimistic because there will be a bright future ahead of you no matter where you end up. Gymnastics will teach you many valuable lessons in life.

What drew you to the Air Force women's gymnastics team?
The energy level amongst the girls is different than most other athletes. They are a rare breed, and you can have so much fun with them.

What are you most excited about for the upcoming season?
This is a very high energetic and close team; it will be fun to see how far we get.

Describe your personality in two words
Adventurous, Rambunctious

Who are the biggest influences in your life and why?
My dad, he went through several struggles in his early life, but turned his life around. He raised a successful family, and now mentors young adolescents who are in jail trying to turn their life around. My mom has always been there for me; she stays strong helping me when I have tough days.



How do you balance your athletics, academics and military duties?
Time manage is the key. I always try to stay ahead of my classes doing a little work every day for each class, and I get big assignments done days before they are due. When I am in the gym, I only focus on gymnastics. Gymnastics is my relief from the hill, and it gives me a break from the hectic life.

Who is your favorite non-gymnast athlete(s) at the Academy?
This is a hard one...but I'll go with David R. Harris

What is your favorite class?
Behavioral Science

Who is your favorite professor/AOC/etc.?
Capt Pound

What is your favorite place on the Academy grounds?
The Gym

What were your first thoughts of the Academy?
Uhhhh, military?? Yeah that's not for me...Then I saw the big picture and realized I can't see myself anywhere else.

What is your favorite thing about USAFA?
The gym team and the Preppies

What has been the hardest thing about the Academy?
Going through two basics (prep school and here) hasn't been the most fun

What was your most memorable "welcome to college" moment?
Tripping and falling on my face day one of basic

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grow up?
A spy

What is one thing that you just can't live without?
A dog

If you had $1,000,000, what would you do?
Darby Germain is going to buy a private jet for the team to leave the country ... the meals, entertainment, professional masseuses, and drinks are all on me.

What is your favorite vacation spot?
Vancouver Island

What is the most interesting place you have traveled to?
I backpacked along the coast on Vancouver Island, Canada

What is one song that you're tired of hearing?
Adele's Rolling in the Deep
