WOODLAND, Calif. -- Air Force gymnasts Mariana Murphy, Tyler Davis and Jessica Kirkpatrick were recognized by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this afternoon (Jan. 9), as the league announced its first weekly award winners of the 2018 campaign. Murphy was named the MPSF Gymnast of the Week, while Davis was awarded the Freshman of the Week and Kirkpatrick was named the Specialist of the Week.
All three selections captured event titles during Air Force's 193.425-191.350 victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse on Saturday, Jan. 6 -- a meet that saw the Falcons register their highest season-opening score since before head coach Doug Day arrived at the Academy in 2007.
Murphy won the balance beam and all-around on Saturday night, leading the Falcons to their season-opening victory and her first career conference award. The junior registered a 9.775 -- her best beam score in two years -- to win that event, while tallying a 38.675 to finish first in the all-around. Murphy also placed within the top half of the field in the remaining three events, scoring a 9.650 on the vault and matching 9.625 marks on the uneven bars and floor exercise.
Davis and Kirkpatrick both shined in their collegiate debuts, combining for two event titles and another pair of runner-up finishes. Scoring a 9.750 to finish first on the vault, Davis also tied for second on the floor exercise (9.700) and earned second outright in the all-around (38.075). As a specialist on the uneven bars, Kirkpatrick registered a 9.775 to win that event and better the rest of the field by 0.775 points.
Air Force returns to action this Sunday (Jan. 14), when it travels to Denver to take on the eighth-ranked Pioneers at 2:00 p.m. (MT) inside Magness Arena.
