USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force women's gymnastics team closed out the 2013 home season in style tonight (March 11), accounting for a combined score of 194.700 - the highest total of head coach Doug Day's seven-year tenure at the Academy - during a dual meet with No. 13 Denver (196.150).
Highlighting the Falcons' team score was an Academy-record uneven bars score of 48.925. That mark broke a program standard that had been held since the 2001 season. The Falcons accounted for three scores of 9.800 or above on that event, with a trio of gymnasts finishing within the top five. Junior Linnaea Hance scored career-best matching mark of 9.850 to tie for third, while classmate Katie Hawthorne and sophomore Jessica Wallander tied for fifth with matching career-best marks of 9.800.
The Falcons accounted for four of the top-six finishes on the floor exercise, backed by matching third-place scores of 9.800 scores from Hawthorne and Hance (career-best matching for Hance). Freshman Shannen Kelly added a fifth-place score of 9.775, while Wallander finished sixth with a mark of 9.750. In fact, all six Air Force gymnasts finished within the top eight, as junior Jen Larsen and sophomore Alexandra Stych finished seventh (9.725) and eighth (9.700), respectively.
Junior Jessica Hanner scored a career-best 9.825 to tie for first on the balance beam, while Wallander was the squad's top scorer on the vault, as she recorded a career-best tally of 9.850 to finish fourth. Larsen, who matched a career-high on the vault (9.775) and set a personal-best tally on the balance beam (9.725), placed second in the all-around with a career-best score of 38.925.
The Falcons' overall team score of 194.700 shattered the previous best mark of 193.825 that the squad recorded earlier this month in a win over Seattle Pacific.
Air Force returns to action this weekend for a pair of meets in California. The Falcons will travel to Davis for a triangular meet with MPSF opponent UC Davis and Sacramento State on Friday, March 15, before heading to Sacramento for a rematch with Sacramento State on Sunday, March 17.
