Falcons Take Third at Berkeley

    BERKELEY, Calif. - With a score of 183.500, the Air Force women's gymnastics team finished third in a tri-meet with Cal and Penn in Berkeley, Calif., on Friday, March 9. The host Bears won the meet with a score of 194.575, while visiting Penn took second with a team total of 191.225.

     

    The Falcons collected their best finish of the night from senior Christine Powers, who placed seventh on the balance beam with a score of 9.600. Classmate Abigail Rogers and sophomore Abigail Rogers picked up eighth-place finishes to lead the squad on the uneven bars and vault, respectively. Iwaniec tallied a 9.450 on the bars, while Rogers posted a career-best 9.600 on the vault. Rogers' tally is the second-best vault score of the season by any member of the team.


     

     

     

    In addition to their team-leading scores, the Falcons' senior duo posted the second-best Air Force scores on a pair of events. Powers tallied a 9.350 on the uneven bars to take 11th, while Iwaniec scored a 9.075 on the balance beam to take the same placement.

     

    While the Falcons tallied their third-best team total of the season on the floor, the Falcons struggled in relation to the two other teams. Junior Katie Donnell led the team with a 9.575 - the second-best individual score on the team - but finished in 11th. Classmate Kelly Lewis, who earned the team's second-best finish of the night on the vault (9.475 for 13th), scored a 9.525 on the floor to finish 12th.

     

    Rogers led the Falcons with a fifth-place finish in the all-around with a total of 36.975.

     

    Air Force will meet up with Cal again next weekend, as the Falcons host the Bears at the Academy on Sunday, March 18. The first performance is slated for 1 p.m., in the Cadet West Gym. Following the meet, the Falcons will honor its three senior gymnasts.
