Air Force Edges Seattle Pacific in MPSF Showdown

SEATTLE, Wash. - Backed by freshman Katie Hawthorne's first collegiate event title, the Air Force women's gymnastics team edged Seattle Pacific by a narrow 188.475-188.275 margin in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Friday, Feb. 25, in Seattle, Wash. Air Force moved to 2-0 on the season against the SPU Falcons.
In her collegiate debut on the uneven bars, Hawthorne accumulated a score of 9.675 to win the event. Air Force also earned a trio of third-place finishes in that event, as junior Samantha Jones and freshmen Jessica Hanner and Linnaea Hance all scored marks of 9.575.
Jones was the Falcons' top place finisher on the vault and floor exercise. Jones tied with senior Brittany Dutton for second on the vault with matching scores of 9.650, while placing fifth on the floor exercise at 9.575.
Air Force claimed four of the top six spots on the balance beam. Hanner was the meet runner-up, as she tallied a 9.600. Hance finished fourth with a score of 9.500, while fellow freshman Jen Larsen (9.450) and Dutton (9.150) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Dutton, who scored a 37.550 to defeat Hance (37.200) in the all-around, also earned a sixth-place score of 9.550 on the floor exercise. Sophomore Tara Harris rounded out the Falcons' top-six finishers, as she scored a 9.525 to take sixth on the vault.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday, March 2, when they host Eastern Michigan in the first of two home meets. Air Force will also host the Eagles on Saturday, March 5. Both matches are slated to begin at 6 p.m.
