Falcons Sweep Floor Exercise for Victory over TWU
Feb. 19, 2009
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Backed by a dominating performance on the floor exercise, the Air Force women's gymnastics team defeated Texas Woman's University, 189.974-188.800 on Thursday (Feb. 19) night at the Academy. The Falcons swept the top six spots on their final event to upend the defending USAG national champions. With a season-best performance on the vault (48.350), Air Force took the lead after the first rotation and held a slight edge throughout the night. The Pioneers used a solid showing on the balance beam to narrow the Falcons' lead to just .400, but Air Force responded by sweeping the floor exercise to secure the win. Jenna Dudley paced the Falcons to the top six spots on the floor exercise, tallying a score of 9.650. Classmate Samantha Jones and senior Abbey Rogers tied for second with matching scores of 9.600, while junior Aftan Boudreaux posted a 9.550 to place fourth. Sophomore Brittany Dutton (fifth, 9.500) and junior Michelle Denise (sixth, 9.450) rounded out the Air Force sweep on that event. The floor exercise was one of two event victories for Dudley, who won the uneven bars with a score of 9.700. In addition, Dudley matched her personal-best score on the vault (9.650) to tie for fifth, while placing second in the all-around with a score of 38.250. In addition to tying for the top spot on the vault with a career-best matching score of 9.775, Rogers won the all-around with a combined total of 38.800. Rogers also matched her career-high on the balance beam, as she finished second to pace the Air Force squad.
Air Force earned four other finishes among the top half of the field. Freshman Katie Shetley posted a career-high 9.750 in her return to the vault lineup to tie for third, while Dutton tied with Dudley for fifth at 9.650. Rogers and Boudreaux finished fourth (9.650) and fifth (9.600), respectively, on the uneven bars, while Denise rounded out the Falcons' top-six finishers with a fourth-place score of 9.600 on the balance beam. The Falcons head out on the road for a pair of contests next weekend. Air Force will face Wisconsin-La Crosse for the second time this season on Friday, Feb. 27, in La Crosse, Wis., before traveling to St. Paul, Minn., to take on Hamline on Sunday, March 1.
