Air Force Improves Season-Best Scores at Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Improving its season-best team score by over five points and significantly bettering all of its individual scores, the Air Force women's gymnastics team scored 184.925 to finish third at the Pitt Triangular on Saturday, Jan. 27, in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Falcons collected six top-10 finishes, highlighted by sixth-place marks on the beam and floor.
Pitt won the meet with a total score of 192.775, while New Hampshire and Air Force finished second (191.400) and third (184.925), respectively.
Pennsylvania natives Abigail Rogers (Pittsburgh) and Sashonna Iwaniec (Ligonier) had a stellar night in their homecoming. The duo tied for the team's best finish of the night, as they scored matching 9.575 marks on the floor exercise to tie for sixth. Rogers also posted a team-best 9.525 on the vault to finish eighth, while Iwaniec led the Falcons on the uneven bars behind an 11th-place score of 9.350.
In addition, Iwaniec won the all-Air Force all-around with a score of 36.975, while Rogers finished a close second with 36.725 points.
Freshman Kayla Kincade (Lakewood, Colo.) posted the team's top score on the balance beam, garnering a 9.650 to place sixth. Senior Christine Powers (Hurst, Texas) tied for seventh on that event with a score of 9.625.
Freshman Michelle Denise (Kennewick, Wash.) tied for 10th on the vault with a career-best 9.375. In addition, Denise collected that same score on the floor exercise, narrowly missing a top-10 spot at 11th.
Air Force opens the home portion of its season next weekend, with a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contests. The Falcons host Seattle-Pacific on Friday (Feb. 2), before closing out the weekend with UC-Davis on Sunday (Feb. 4).
