Duke Invitational Provides Mixed Results for Air Force Fencers
The Air Force fencing teams return from the Duke Invitational having fenced well, but compiling 2-3 record in dual meets. "It was a tough meet," said head coach Abdel Salem. "Overall I am pleased. We are definitely improving." The men's team grabbed victories from North Carolina and Duke, but fell to Notre Dame, Ohio State and Stanford. The women's team also won two dual meets. They knocked off Duke and Ohio State, but lost to North Carolina, Stanford and Notre Dame. Against Stanford, ranked third in the nation, the women's sabre and epee teams won, but the foil team lost 9-0, costing the Falcons a chance at the upset. "The men should not have lost to Ohio State and the women should not have lost to North Carolina," Salem said. "Our teams fenced very well against Notre Dame and Stanford, two of the best teams in the country. But both teams could have finished 3-2 rather than 2-3." The Falcons have two weeks to prepare for the Armed Forces Open, which they will host Saturday, Feb. 24 in the Cadet East Gymnasium.
