USAFA, Colo. -
Highlighted by the new 18-game Mountain West slate, the 2013-14 Air Force women's basketball schedule was released today by head coach Andrea Williams.
With newcomers San Jose State and Utah State joining the Mountain West this season, the conference schedule has been adjusted so that each team plays eight league opponents twice and two conference opponents once (one home, one away). This season, the Falcons will play New Mexico (home) and Utah State (away) just once.
"We're excited about our new schedule and the new format in the Mountain West," said Williams. "We get to keep our home-and-aways with our Front Range rivals. Our schedule features a lot of top-notch competition, just what the Mountain West is all about. We're looking forward to the adventure ahead."
The Falcons open the season on Nov. 8 with a tremendous challenge, as they visit ACC powerhouse North Carolina. Air Force returns home for its next three games, hosting Northern Colorado (Nov. 12), Denver (Nov. 16) and San Francisco (Nov. 23), before heading to Ogden, Utah, to face Weber State on Nov. 26.
The Falcons have a post-Thanksgiving contest at Wichita State on Dec. 1, before hosting the annual Air Force Classic, Dec. 6-7. The Falcons will face SIUE on Friday evening and North Dakota State on Saturday, while conference foe Wyoming rounds out the field of competitors in the tournament.
Air Force will visit Omaha on Dec. 11 and close out its non-conference slate at the UNF Holiday Tournament, Dec. 20-21. The Falcons will face host North Florida in the opening game of the tournament, while also taking on Eastern Illinois.
After a brief holiday break, Air Force returns to action on Jan. 1 with the beginning of the 2014 conference slate, as the Falcons visit league newcomer Utah State. Air Force then hosts back-to-back games versus UNLV (Jan. 4) and Fresno State (Jan. 8), before returning to the road for contests at San Diego State (Jan. 11) and new opponent San Jose State (Jan. 15).
The Falcons host Colorado State on Jan. 18 and travel to Wyoming on Jan. 21 before their first bye of the season. Air Force returns to action with home games against Boise State (Jan. 29) and Nevada (Feb. 1), then heads back on the road for contests at Fresno State (Feb. 5) and Colorado State (Feb. 8). The Falcons follow with two more home games, hosting San Jose State (Feb. 12) and San Diego State (Feb. 15).
After its second bye, Air Force closes out the regular season with five more games, including three on the road. The Falcons visit Nevada on Feb. 22, followed by a home game against Wyoming (Feb. 26) and a road contest at UNLV (March 1). Air Force's only match-up with New Mexico comes on March 4, as the Falcons close out their home slate against the Lobos. Meanwhile, Air Force wraps up the regular season on March 7 with a game at Boise State.
Meanwhile, the 2014 Mountain West Championship will be held March 10-15 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The women's first-round and quarterfinal games are scheduled for March 10 and 11, while the semifinal games will be held March 14. The week will conclude with the championship contest, slated for 7:00 p.m. (PT) on March 15.
