USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - 1st Lt. Derek Brooks has been assigned as an assistant coach for the Air Force women's basketball program, according to head coach Andrea Williams. Brooks, a 2011 Academy graduate, joins the Falcon coaching staff after spending three years at Hanscom AFB, Mass., as a financial management officer.

"We are thrilled to have 1st Lt. Brooks join our women's basketball coaching staff," Williams said. "He brings great pride back to the Academy and our athletic department. I remember watching him play during our first season here. He understands our Academy and our tradition. I know our team will grow as future Air Force officers from his time mentoring them. He brings great energy and a tremendous work ethic into our program. We are very excited for him and this coaching opportunity."

During his three years at Hanscom, Brooks served as a budget analyst for the Space/Nuclear Network Divison (SNND) and the Space, Aerial & Nuclear Networks Division (SANND). He also served as a financial analyst for the two-star General in the Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, and Networks (C3I&N) Directorate.

Brooks, who earned his bachelor's degree in social sciences, enjoyed an outstanding basketball career with the Falcons from 2008-2011. A four-year letterwinner and captain of the 2011 Falcons, Brooks helped lead Air Force to a berth in the CollegeInsider Tournament. As a senior, Brooks averaged 10 points and five rebounds per game, while shooting 49% from the field and 43% from three-point range.

After graduation, Brooks had the opportunity to play for the bronze medal winning 2011 All-Armed Forces team that competed in the International SHAPE tournament in Mons, Belgium. The team also featured former Falcon teammates Tim Anderson, Matthew Holland, Avery Merriex and Hunter Myers. He also competed with former Academy teammates on the 2012 All-Air Force team that won the gold medal at the 2012 Armed Forces Championships.
