COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force women's basketball players Mary Cavanaugh and Kelly Lujan were both named to the spring 2014 Academic All-Mountain West team, as announced by the conference last week. They become the first Falcons to earn academic all-conference honors since 2011.
Cavanaugh, who completed her freshman campaign with a 3.11 GPA, played in 26 games for the Falcons in 2013-14. A native of Arvada, Colo., Cavanaugh averaged 2.0 points and 1.2 rebounds per contest for Air Force.
Meanwhile, Lujan, who also compiled a 3.11 GPA in her freshman season, played in all 29 games for the Falcons, starting nine. The Reno, Nev., native was Air Force's top scoring freshman, averaging 3.9 points per contest, while adding 1.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
A league-record 897 student-athletes from the following sports--baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field--were named to this year's spring academic all-conference team. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
