COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force junior Katie Hilbig was named Mountain West Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week for her play in the final week of regular-season competition, as announced today by the conference office. Hilbig, who shares the honor with UNLV's Kelli Thompson, receives the first weekly honor of her career and the first for an Air Force player since the 2008-09 season.
A native of Castle Rock, Colo., Hilbig registered her third double-double of the season to lead the Falcons to a 52-47 victory over New Mexico in their regular-season finale. She finished the game with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as Air Force won its first conference game of the season, ending a 14-game losing streak.
Air Force's win over New Mexico on Wednesday was just its second ever, and the first since the initial meeting between the two teams in January 1992. Hilbig, who grabbed eight of her 14 rebounds on the offensive glass, also registered three steals and two assists in a career-high 35 minutes of action.
Meanwhile, Thompson scored a team-high 21 points to lead UNLV past Colorado State, 53-48, clinching a second-place conference finish for the Lady Rebels, who earned their first-ever top-two finish in the Mountain West.
Hilbig and the rest of the Falcons will head to Las Vegas, Nev., this week, March 7-10 for the 2012 Conoco Mountain West Championship, being held at the Thomas & Mack Center. Air Force, seeded eighth in the tournament, will take on top-seed San Diego State in the first game of the week, slated for Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. (PT).
