The Air Force women's basketball team heads to the road to take on Wyoming on Thursday (Feb. 5) and Colorado State on Saturday (Feb. 7). The Falcons are looking to win their first road games of the season and hope to snap a nine-game losing streak.
RADIO/INTERNET
Both of this weekend's games will be broadcast on local radio at The Buzz (KBZC 1300 AM, Colorado Springs). Jay Ritchie will be the announcer. The CSU game will also be broadcast and will be the last regular season radio game of the season.
SERIES HISTORY
The Falcons are 1-22 all-time against the Cowgirls. They won in 1985, but have lost the teams' previous 16 games. Last season, Wyoming notched two victories over the Falcons -- by 15 points in Laramie and 29 points in Clune Arena.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
The Falcons are riding a nine-game losing streak. Their most recent defeat was a disappointing five-point loss to San Diego State at home. The Falcons are still struggling from the free throw line, shooting just 60.7 percent, last in the league. Freshman Letricia Castillo leads the team and is sixth in the league with 13.4 ppg. Shawna Neff is scoring 10.3 ppg, while Amoy Jackson is at 10.2 ppg. Jackson is averaging 6.1 rebounds per game to lead the team.
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS
After losing seven of its first eight games, Wyoming has won six of their last 10, including conference wins over BYU, SDSU and CSU. They are 7-11 overall and 3-2 in the league. They are last in the league in scoring offense, averaging just 50.8 points per game and third in the league in scoring defense (58.6 ppg). Ashley Elliott leads the team and is second in the league in scoring with 16.4 points per game. Michelle Lieber leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game.
ROAD WOES
The Falcons will be looking for their first road win of the season this weekend. They have yet to win a road game this season, going winless in seven attempts. They have lost their last 15 road games, dating to last year. Their last road win was a three-point victory at Texas Pan American (Jan. 9, 2003). They have never won a Mountain West road game.
PREVIEWING COLORADO STATE
Following the Wyoming game, Air Force will travel to Fort Collins to take on the Rams. The Falcons are 5-23 all time versus the Rams. They last won in 1990-91, when they defeated CSU 75-66. They have lost the teams' last 15 meetings, including both games last year. The Falcons lost to the Rams by 44 points in 2001-02, the worst loss in McInelly's career.
LOOKING AHEAD
Air Force will be on the road again next week when they travel to New Mexico for the second round of games against conference opponents. The Falcons lost to New Mexico 65-43 in the teams' first meeting earlier this season at Clune Arena in a game that was closer than the final score would indicate.
