Steele Named MWC Co-Player of the Week

    Air Force junior Alecia Steele (Oklahoma City,Okla.) and UNLV sophomore Shamela Hampton were named the Mountain West Conference Basketball Co-Players of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday. Both players earn the honor for the first time in their careers.

    Steele scored 15 of her career-high 26 points in the second half to help the Falcons overcome a 13-point deficit against Weber State, while also tying a career best with 13 rebounds. She shot 10-for-11 from the field in Air Force's come-from-behind victory, helping the Falcons snap a four-game losing streak.

    Hampton averaged 23 points while helping UNLV to a 2-0 week, including an 89-71 rout of then No. 19 DePaul. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half, helping the Rebels to a 45-24 halftime lead. In the win over Nevada, Hampton scored 15 points in each half for a new career-high 30 points, topping her previous high of 22. She added 10 rebounds for her second career double-double, finishing 11-of-13 from the floor.

    The Falcons open up the 2007 conference slate this week with a pair of contests, hosting Colorado State on Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m., followed by a game versus BYU on Jan. 6 at 4:00 p.m.
