Falcons Drop Conference Opener to Nevada

    RENO, Nev. - Playing its first Mountain West contest of the season, the Air Force women's basketball team fell to conference newcomer Nevada, 67-54, Wednesday evening at the Lawlor Events Center.

    Senior Alicia Leipprandt (Ubly, Mich.) was the lone Falcon to score in double figures, registering 13 points. Dymond James (Sr., Brambleton, Va.) added nine points and nine rebounds, while Katie Hilbig (Sr., Castle Rock, Colo.) grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds.

    Nevada (6-8, 1-0), which led by as many as 11 points in the opening half, shot over 41 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes to take a 31-22 advantage at the break. After an Air Force run cut the margin to four points early in the second half, the Wolf Pack pushed its lead back to 11 points with just under 14 minutes to play.

    However, the Falcons continued to chip away at their deficit, coming within 54-52 after a pair of free throws by Missy Byrd (Fr., Decatur, Ga.) with 2:08 remaining, Unfortunately, Air Force (1-13, 0-1) could not get its shots to fall in the final two minutes, while Nevada scored nine of its last 11 points at the charity stripe.

    The Falcons are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 12, when they host UNLV at 1:00 p.m. in Clune Arena.
