Air Force Hosts Coe, Western State to Open Dual Slate

    The Air Force wrestling team opens up its 2010-11 dual slate with a pair of home matches on Friday, Dec. 10. The Falcons host Coe at 2:00 p.m., followed by a dual against Western State at 4:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Coe and Western State will face each other at 6:00 p.m.

    Fans who are unable to make it to Clune Arena on Friday can still catch all of the action on the web. Live video streaming, as well as live stats, will be available free of charge on goairforcefalcons.com.

    Last Time Out...
    The Falcons competed in a pair of events last weekend, the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the FHSU-Bob Smith Open.

    Sophomore Cole VonOhlen, ranked 17th in the nation during last week's tournament, was the Falcons' top performer at the CKLV Invitational, placing seventh at 141 pounds, with a 5-2 record on the weekend.

    Meanwhile, six Air Force wrestlers placed at the FHSU-Bob Smith Open, led by freshman Greg Rinker, who earned the first tournament title of his career with a first-place showing at the 125-pound weight class. Also placing for the Falcons at the tournament were Tyler Untrauer (2nd, 133); Andrew Zwirlein (3rd, 125); Alec Williams (3rd, 157); Kazden Ikehara (3rd, 184); and Devin Hightower (4th, 174).

     

     

    Scouting the Falcons...
    This weekend will mark the first dual meets of the season for Air Force. Leading the Falcons in total wins through the first month of competition is freshman Jesse Stafford with 15, while three others¡©¡©¡©--Devin Hightower, Cole VonOhlen and Alec Williams--have each notched 14 wins on the year.

    In addition, 23 different Falcons have notched falls early in the season, led by Williams, who has recorded seven pins. Freshman Greg Rinker has the fastest fall of the season, registering a pin in just 31 seconds.

    Scouting the Kohawks...
    Coe, ranked fourth in the latest Division III poll, enters this weekend's duals with a 3-1 record. The Kohawks, whose lone loss of the season came against Iowa, finished second at the Simpson Invitational last weekend.

    Six Coe wrestlers are ranked in the latest Brute-Adidas Division III rankings. Leading the way is top-ranked Clayton Rush (125), who enters this weekend with an 11-1 overall record.

    Scouting the Mountaineers...
    Western State, ranked fourth in the latest Division II poll, enters this weekend with a 1-0 dual record. The Mountaineers defeated Mesa State, 28-12, in their first dual of the season last week.

    Four Western State wrestlers are currently ranked in their respective weight classes, led by No. 1 Donovan McMahill at 197 pounds. Also ranked for the Mountaineers are No. 3 Charlie Alexander (HWT), No. 6 Kyle O'Brien (125) and No. 7 Justin Morris (157).

    Sophomore Cole VonOhlen, the Falcons' returning NCAA qualifier, is currently ranked 11th in the nation at 141 pounds in the latest Intermat poll. In addition, VonOhlen is rated 10th by Amateur Wrestling News, 14th by WrestlingReport.com, 17th by D1 College Wrestling and 18th by WIN Magazine. ¡¡

    The Falcons face a formidable foe in their next dual match, as they host 12th-ranked Oregon State next Friday, Dec. 17. The dual is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. in Clune Arena.
