Air Force Grapplers Succeed at Collegiate Invitational

The Falcons' wrestling team had a solid outing at the Collegiate Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., placing 25th out of 52 teams. The team scored 34 points in the prestigious tournament - the most points they have ever scored in the event.

Scott Frohardt (Parker, Colo.) placed fifth in the tournament, the highest finish ever for an Air Force wrestler at the Invitational. Frohardt, wrestling at the 149-pound weight class, barely missed placing higher, as he lost a tough 5-3 decision in his semi-final match to a Lehigh wrestler ranked second in the nation.

Heavyweight Kevin Hoy (Waretown, N.J.) had a solid tournament, finishing 4-3 to capture eighth place. Terry Parham (Pacific Junction, Iowa) also wrestled well, needing just one more victory at 174 pounds to place.

"Our wrestlers did very, very well," said head coach Wayne Baughman. "Illinois ran away with the tournament, but our wrestlers did an outstanding job."

The Falcons' junior varsity wrestlers also had a productive weekend, participating in the Fort Hays Open in Fort Hays, Kansas. Blaine Brown (Canon City, Colo.) placed second at the 157-pound weight class, while teammate Ryan Brewer (Mohave Valley, Ariz.) placed second at 141 pounds.

The Falcons' varsity squad wrestles in its first dual competition of the season Friday, Dec. 8, when the team hosts Colorado Mines. Start time is 7 p.m. in the Cadet East Gymnasium.
