The Air Force wrestling team returns to action this weekend, Dec. 1, as it heads to Hays, Kan., for the FHSU-Bob Smith Open, hosted by Fort Hays State.
Last Time Out...
Two Air Force wrestlers were placewinners at the Kaufman/Brand Open Nov. 17, led by freshman Derek Gillespie, who took third place at 133 pounds in the Amateur Division. Gillespie went 4-1 on the weekend, improving his season record to 9-1 overall.
Meanwhile, in the Elite Division, sophomore Tyler French captured fourth place at 174 pounds. French, who competed in seven bouts on the day, finished with a 5-2 record, registering four decisions and a fall.
Scouting the Falcons...
Leading Air Force so far this season is freshman Derek Gillespie, who has finished as a placewinner in both events this season, entering this weekend with a 9-1 overall record. Senior Anthony Stegeman and sophomore Tyler French are both tied for second on the team in total wins with seven, as Stegeman is 7-3 on the season with a third place finish at the Cowboy Open, while French took fourth at the Kaufman/Brand Open
Meanwhile, four different Falcons--Gillespie, Kurt Spranger, Joseph Stafford and Chris Szabolcs share the team lead with two falls on the season, with Spranger owning a fastest fall of 46 seconds.
Up Next...
The Falcons open their 2007-08 dual slate next weekend, Dec. 8, when they host Western State in a 2:00 p.m. contest. The match will take place in the Cadet West Gym, along with an intrasquad meet for the women's gymnastics team.
