Falcons Head to Omaha for Kaufman-Brand Open

    The Air Force wrestling team returns to action this weekend, Nov. 21, with a trip to the Kaufman-Brand Open, hosted by Nebraska-Omaha.

    About the Kaufman-Brand Open...
    The 27th-annual Kaufman-Brand Open, which is being held at Sapp Fieldhouse, is the largest single-day wrestling tournament in the nation. More than 500 wrestlers from Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA schools are slated to compete. Action begins at 9 a.m. (CT).

    Last Year at the Kaufman-Brand Open...
    Last year, two Falcons came away from the Kaufman-Brand Open as placewinners. Senior Stephen Crozier captured sixth place at 165 pounds in the Elite Division, while freshman Tyler Untrauer, wrestling in the Amateur Division, placed sixth at 133 pounds.

    Last Time Out...
    The Falcons opened the 2009-10 season last weekend at the annual Cowboy Open, hosted by Wyoming. Seven different Air Force wrestlers were placewinners, including freshmen Cole VonOhlen (Elite, 141) and Robert Isley (Amateur, 184), who captured titles in their respective weight classes.

    Also finishing in the top four in the Elite Division at the Cowboy Open were senior Tyler French (174) and junior Andrew Zwirlein (125), who each placed third in their respective weight classes. Meanwhile, in the Amateur Division, Tyler Spangler took second place at 133 pounds, Josh Mohr placed third at 184 pounds and Dake Williams finished fourth in the heavyweight class.

    Scouting the Falcons...
    After one week of competition, there are 11 Air Force wrestlers with at least three victories, led by freshmen Josh Mohr and Dake Williams with five wins each. Meanwhile, rookies Cole VonOhlen and Robert Isley have each started their collegiate careers with a 4-0 mark in their first weekend of action.

     

     

    Ten different Falcons notched falls in the opening weekend of competition, led by Dake Williams, who notched four pins. Meanwhile, Mohr has posted the fastest fall of the young season, recording a pin in a time of 1:13.

    Up Next...
    The Falcons get a break next weekend, but return to action Dec. 4-5 for the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Meanwhile, another group of Air Force wrestlers will head to Hays, Kan., for the FHSU-Bob Smith Open on Dec. 5.
