Falcons Set To Compete At Northern Colorado Open
The Air Force wrestling team continues the season this weekend, as it travels to Greeley, Colo., Nov. 19, for the Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open, being held at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.
Last Time Out... Three Falcons were placewinners in the open competition, while three others did the same in the 20 and under division, when Air Force opened the 2005-06 season last weekend at the Cowboy Open. Senior captains Brandon Strong and Beau Tresemer each finished second at 133 and 165 pounds, respectively, while sophomore Jake Kriegbaum took fourth place at 141 pounds. Strong and Tresemer both had records of 3-1 in the tournament, while Kreigbaum finished the weekend at 3-2. Meanwhile, in the 20 and under division, freshman Billy Blumhoefer took second place at 197 pounds with a 2-1 record, freshman Frank McGrath took third at heavyweight after going 4-1 on the day and sophomore Matt McDiarmid finished fourth at 133 pounds, compiling a 5-2 record at the Cowboy Open. Our Leaders... After just one tournament, senior Brandon Strong leads the team with three falls, after pinning his opponent in all three of his victories. Meanwhile, sophomore Matt McDiarmid leads the Falcons with five total victories on the early season. Meanwhile, two other Falcons have also racked up at least four wins after one weekend of competition. Freshman Frank McGrath finished the Cowboy Open with a 4-1 record en route to his second place finish at heavyweight of the 20 and under division. In addition, senior Zane Hershey, who just missed placing among the top four competitors in the Open Division at 184 pounds, compiled a 4-2 record in the opening weekend of competition. Leading the team in major decisions in the opening weekend were McDiarmid and senior Beau Tresemer, with two majors each. Up Next... The Falcons are back in action next weekend, Nov. 26, when they head to Norman, Okla., for the Oklahoma Open.
