THIS WEEK: The Falcon wrestling team will host its annual Black and Blue Exhibitions, Thursday evening at 7 p.m. The Falcons will host six exhibition matches in the opening home event at Clune Arena. On Saturday, Nov. 18, a small contingency of Falcons will travel to Kearney, Neb., to compete in the Holiday Inn Open, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m. CT, and are expected to run all day.
LAST WEEK: Alec Opsal and Anthony McLaughlin led the Falcons with decision wins against No. 6 Minnesota, Sunday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion. The Gophers, who boast four nationally ranked wrestler including NCAA finalist Ethan Lizak, outscored Air Force, 29-6. In the 197 bout, Falcon veteran McLaughlin registered a series of takedowns and escapes over NCAA qualifier, Bobby Steveson, to post a 7-4 victory over the Gopher. McLaughlin is 7-0 in dual bouts dating back to last season, where he finished with a perfect 6-0 mark in dual meets.
On the Western front, Noah Irons led a small contingency of Falcons at the Northern Colorado Open with a 4-0 record en route to a first-place title in the 174 class. Josh Giorgio and Tyler Wiederholt registered runner-up finishes, while Luke Boyle and Garret O’Shea finished third. Eleven Falcons earned place-winning finishes on the event.
COMING UP: Air Force continues dual-meet action on Nov. 21, against the Big 12’s newest affiliate addition, Fresno State, in an unprecedented Div. I wrestling event. The Battle on the Midway marks the first time that the prestigious museum will host a collegiate wrestling dual on the flight deck. The bout is slated for a 7 p.m. PT start. IN OTHER NEWS: Junior Alex Mossing became Air Force’s first-ever U23 World Team Trials Champion, after going 4-0 en route to the championship title of the Greco-Roman 71kg class, Oct. 8, at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minn. Mossing won the title in the first two matches (best of three) over Colin Schubert (NYAC/NMU), including a phenomenal four-point throw in the waning seconds of the first match.
Mossing, a native of Toledo, Ohio, is one of eight athletes to represent Team USA’s Greco-Roman team, November 21-26, 2017 in Bydgoszcz, Poland at the Senior U23 World Championships. He is the first Falcon in program history to compete at such an event.
