Peterson Takes First Place At Cowboy Open
Senior captain Josh Peterson (Comstock, Wis.) finished first at 149 pounds, while four other Falcons were placewinners as the Air Force wrestling team started its season Sunday at the Cowboy Open, hosted by Wyoming.
Junior Matt Benza (Tamaqua, Pa.) was second in the 133-lb. weight class, while 2004 NCAA qualifier Brandon Strong (Jr., Denver, Colo.) finished third at 125 pounds. Meanwhile, Zane Hershey (Hugoton, Kan.) placed fourth at 184 pounds and Brenden McLean (Jr., Grants Pass, Ore.) was fourth at 197. In addition to its five placewinners in the Division I bracket of the tournament, Air Force also had six wrestlers place in the Division II bracket. Leading the way was sophomore Bridger Lord (Missoula, Mont.), who took second place at 149 pounds. At 133 pounds, teammates Jake Kreigbaum (Abilene, Kan.) and Michael Gruber (So., Atlanta, Ga.) placed third and fourth, respectively. Freshman Clint Sponseller (Glenmont, Ohio) took home a fourth-place finish at 141 pounds, while Steven Ratley (Arlington, Va.) placed third at 165. Rounding out the group was freshman Trey McLean (Grants Pass, Ore.) who had a fourth-place showing in the heavyweight class.
