Three Wrestlers Grab First-Place Honors at Cowboy Open
Laramie (Nov. 12) - The Air Force wrestling team opened its season in Wyoming, as 20 wrestlers competed in the Cowboy Open Nov. 12. Eight Falcon grapplers placed in the event, including three first-place finishers.
No. 1 seeded Scott Frohardt (Parker, Colo.) won five matches at the 149-pound weight class to win first place. Frohardt won the final match 3-2, defeating Collin Robertson of Boise State. Frohardt, who wrestled at 149 pounds last year, finished the 1999-2000 season ranked 16th in the nation.
Terry Parham (Pacific Junction, Iowa) went 3-0 to capture first place at the 174-pound weight class. Parham defeated Wyoming's Steven Schenk 4-3 in the championship match to grab first-place honors. T.J Huxel (Madison, Ohio) also brought home a trophy, capturing first-place at 157 pounds. Huxel, who wrestled at 149 pounds last season, defeated Northern Colorado's Marshall Hahn 5-2 in the final match.
Team captain Scott Jenkins (St. Francis, Kansas) placed second at 165 pounds. Jenkins' 9-3 loss to No. 1- seed Kyle Klonzinos of Boise State cost him a chance at the title. Ryan Montanez (Simi Valley, Calif.) went 4-1 at 141 pounds, while Sam Sherertz (St. Louis, Mo.) was 3-1 at 184 pounds to garner third-place honors in their respective weight classes. Three Falcon newcomers were place-winners in the Under 20 division. Freshman Blaine Brown (Canon City, Colo.) had a solid start to his Air Force career, grabbing third place at 157 pounds. Brown won his first match, then was defeated in his second match. In the loser's bracket, Brown won six consecutive matches to capture third place. Freshman Ryan Coates (San Antonio, Texas) also had a solid outing, going 3-1 to place second at 197 pounds. Freshman Heath McKim (Valley, Neb.) finished the tournament 4-1 at 125 pounds to capture a third-place finish.
Up next for the Falcons is another open tournament, as the team travels to Pueblo on Saturday, Nov. 18, to compete in the Southern Colorado Open.
