Air Force Wrestlers Start Season at Hokie Open

The Air Force wrestling team officially begins the 2012-13 season this weekend, Nov. 4, when it travels to Salem, Va., for the Hokie Open, hosted by Virginia Tech.

This year, the Air Force wrestling team enters its seventh season under the guidance of head coach Joel Sharratt. Last season, the Falcons finished the year with an 8-5 overall dual record and 3-3 mark in the Western Wrestling Conference, as well as a fourth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional.

The Falcons return 11 letterwinners from the 2011-12 season, including nine wrestlers who competed at last year's NCAA West Regional. Leading the way is senior Cole VonOhlen, a three-time NCAA qualifier with a career record of 112-22.

The Hokie Open, currently in its fifth season, is a double-elimination tournament which will award six placewinners at each weight class. Among the schools that are expected to compete on Sunday are Air Force, Appalachian State, Chattanooga, Duke, Gardner-Webb, No. 25 Hofstra, Indiana, King College, Liberty, Newberry, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Rutgers, The Citadel, VMI, Washington and Lee and 12th-ranked host Virginia Tech.

Entering the 2012-13 season, the Falcons have two wrestlers currently ranked by numerous wrestling publications. Senior captain Cole VonOhlen, a returning three-time NCAA qualifier, is rated 12th in the nation at 149 pounds by Intermat, while he is ranked ninth by W.I.N. Magazine, 11th by and DI College Wrestling and 12th by Amateur Wrestling News.

Meanwhile, junior Josh Kreimier, a 2012 NCAA qualifier at 157 pounds, is currently ranked 16th at 157 pounds by Intermat. He is also rated ninth by Amateur Wrestling News, 14th by W.I.N. Magazine and 16th by DI College Wrestling.

Air Force wrapped up its preseason wrestle-offs with the annual Blue-Silver Intrasquad Match, held Oct. 24 in Clune Arena. Following are complete results from the Blue-Silver Match:
