COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Two Air Force wrestlers have been named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes for the 2011-12 season, as announced by the league this week. Earning the honor this year are rising seniors Jared Erickson and Brandon Mueller, who each earn their third MWC Scholar-Athlete accolades of their careers.
Erickson, a native of Newton, Utah, currently holds a 3.57 GPA as a civil engineering major. The Falcons' starting heavyweight for the past two seasons was also named to the WWC All-Academic team this year. Meanwhile, Mueller, a physics major from Greenleaf, Wis., owns the top GPA on the team, carrying a 3.72 grade point average.
A total of 471 student-athletes were honored with the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award this season. The award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
