Air Force sophomores Dylan Hyder and Jesse Stafford have both been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association's (NWCA) Individual All-Academic team for the 2012-13 wrestling season, as announced today by the organization. Hyder and Stafford become the first Falcons since 2009 to receive the honor.
This year's Individual All-Academic Team features 82 total athletes, including four NCAA champions, four NCAA runner-ups, 21 All-Americans and 72 NCAA qualifiers. To qualify for selection on the NWCA Individual All-Academic team, wrestlers must A) have a 3.2 GPA and been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule and must have competed in 60 percent of team schedule or B) have a 3.0 GPA and earned NCAA All-American honors.
Hyder, a native of Yelm, Wash., has compiled a 3.27 GPA as an operations research major. He posted a 21-14 overall record (.600) during the 2012-13 season and captured his first NCAA West Regional title at 133 pounds to earn an NCAA berth. Meanwhile, Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) holds a 3.54 GPA as a civil engineering major. The Falcons' starter at 165 pounds, Stafford compiled a 23-13 overall record (.639) for the season.
