May 2, 2002
Kevin Hoy placed sixth at the U.S. National freestyle competition, becoming the first cadet in to ever place in the event. The competition is a Olympic Trials Qualifying event and World Team Trials qualifying event.
"This is where the big boys compete," assistant coach Doug Wells said. "The best in the U.S. come to this meet to earn an invitation to the Olympic and World Team Trials."
Hoy will wrestle this weekend at the University Freestyle Nationals at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
Former cadet Phil Johnston, who wrestled heavyweight at the Academy from 1996-2000, also placed in the event. Coming into the competition unseeded, Johnston had several upsets en route to placing fifth in Greco Roman. He has qualified and has been accepted into the World Class Athlete program and is now currently ranked sixth in the United States at Greco (96 kg).
