Wrestlers Compete at NCAA Championships
The Air Force wrestling team finished its season last weekend,
as three
Falcons competed at the NCAA Championships. Air Force scored
four team
points to finish tied for 42nd place in the Championships, which
were held
March 15-17 in Iowa City, Iowa.
Sophomore Kevin Hoy (Hwt) was the most successful of the three Air Force wrestlers, winning two matches, including a pin of North Carolina's Matt Kenny in just 1:37. Both of his losses were by just one point, including one loss in the final seconds of the match. Hoy qualified for the NCAAs with an at-large bid after grabbing third place at Regionals. Junior Scott Frohardt (149 lbs.) qualified for the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive year. Frohardt defeated Wyoming's Mark Hamrick 6-1 in the championship bout at the West Regionals. Frohardt was the Falcons' only first-place winner in the tournament. Struggling with the death of his grandmother the day before the Championships, Frohardt lost both of his matches against two tough competitors. Timothy Huxel (157 lbs.) also earned an at-large berth, after winning 6-4 in the true second-place match over Levi Prevost (Wyoming), whom he faced again in Iowa. Huxel defeated Provost 12-6 in his first wrestle-back match, but lost his other two matches, including a loss to Oklahoma's Shane Roller, the eventual third-place winner.
