Brackets Released for NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships

    INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The field for the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships was announced on Wednesday, including complete brackets for the event that will be held March 17-19 in Philadelphia, Pa. In addition, 50 at-large selections were named, to join the 280 athletes who have already received automatic bids through their regional and conference qualifying tournaments.

    Sophomore Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.), who earned his second-straight NCAA bid by winning the West Regional title at 141 pounds, is seeded ninth in his weight class and will face Iowa State's Chris Droiun in the opening round of competition next weekend. VonOhlen, named the Outstanding Wrestler at the NCAA West Regional, currently holds a 42-7 overall record on the year.

    Meanwhile, two athletes from the Western Wrestling Conference received at-large bids, joining the 15 automatic qualifiers from the West Regional. North Dakota State's Trent Sprenkle received an at-large spot at 125 pounds, while Northern Colorado's Casey Cruz was named an at-large selection at 133 pounds. Air Force senior Derek Gillespie (Chesapeake, Va.), under consideration for an at-large bid, just missed out on a qualifying spot to this year's championships, despite winning a true second match against Cruz at the West Regional on Sunday.
